Yeah - that bike is too heavy as it is for the brakes on it. Load it up and you'll be planning your stops with a calendar.

Do as USAZorro suggests - find a rigid frame mtb with canti's and a triple, and build one up. The stopping and gearing will be way better suited to touring, and it'll probably ride nicer all loaded up.
