I'm surprised everyone can answer so definitively.

What kind of "touring" are you talking about? A SAG'ed & supported overnight ride? Three days, inn-to-inn, eating in resturants? Self-contained and fully loaded across country? Flat with tailwinds or mountains with headwinds?

Just for the record, quite a number of the thousands of USA coast-to-coast Bikecentennial riders in 1976 rode electroforged Schwinns. The bikes were fairly heavy and highly geared for that kind of work, but proved to be robust and more trouble free than many pedigreed tourers.
