I recently gave a friend of mine her first fixed gear (she had been riding a single speed for a while). While I was giving her the safety advice rundown, I realized how some things that seem like second nature to experienced riders would intimidate newbies. Things like "be careful of your pant legs and shoelaces", "don't take corners too quickly", "don't try to coast" and "make sure the chain is tight enough to not fall off" are critical details that just exacerbate the mental and physical hurdle of getting back on a bike and riding in traffic.

So, no, I probably would not recommend getting on a fixed gear right out of the gate.
