front derailleur
I started tearing down my latest Varsity the blue one and as I was taking off the derailleurs I noticed the front one is really worn it looks like its probably toast. Surprisingly enough the rear one is prett good and my guy at the LBS said to clean it up and use it. Now these items are stamped Sprint and made in France as are the two front chain rings what is the story on the Sprint stuff? What is a good replacement for the FD? Can I use on from a later model Varsity one that is Schwinn approved? I figured I might be able to and have seen several on e-bay for very reasonable prices. Thanks. For some reason the drive train on this bike is in a lot worse shape than the green on I did but the paint is a lot better and its an older bike 1964 as opposed to the green one 1971. I want to get the freewheel off and took it to my LBS and they couldn't get it to move and their tool was starting to get chewed up and so was the freewheel. Its only got two contact points instead of the splined style like the 71 so I'm trying to figure out how I'm gonna get this pig apart. I'm thinking a good long soak of penetrating oil might do the trick or I might have to resort to the old hammer and drive pin punch method and then replace the freewheel. I'd like to keep it original as possible but ya never can tell. Oh yeah and the cables for the brakes and the DR's and the housings too are almost pristine go figure
