Depending on where you are going, it might be less expensive to ship it fed ex or ups (in that same cardboard box). Weight and size of box will be important.

I always use a cardboard box for my tour bike. I've been charged no fee for international flights, and always a fee in the US. Southwest is the cheapest at $50 each way (not each flight leg). All the others are $80, last time I looked.
