Punt. Your LBS can get 27" alloy wheelsets for about $75 a set. Lighter and better braking when wet. Hang your old set up before you tear up the freewheel, then put them back on if/when you sell the bike.

Note: I was going to suggest bikepartsusa.com for cheap 27" wheelsets but they seem to have gone custom only, and they aren't cheap!
