I also ride a Surly Cross Check. If you're concerned about weight, I'd just change the fork because it adds alot. I have a dedicated roadbike and I use my cyclocross bike for commuting, and it's awesome in just about any kind of terrain you'd encounter on the road. I've also known people to take it mountain biking just by putting fatter tires on it. It's a great all-purpose bike.
