Cross bikes are do all bikes.. I have a surly crosscheck and with a change of tires can ride the fire roads here.. Put smaller tires and is a good solid road bike.. Load it up and my crosshcheck can also work as a loaded touring bike.. I ride my cross bike when I ride at night, I have wider tires at 700x28 and I don't have to worry as much about hitting ruts and junk in the road when riding in the dark..

The crosscheck can take anything from the narrowest road tire up to 700x45 tires..
