several of the bikes I own, and many other bikes I've looked at have a small peg somewhere along the inside of the right hand seat stay, and since I've been forced to answer 'I don't know' all the time, I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone knows what it's for?

The only 'answer' I've been furnished is that they are for mounting a chain gaurd, but most of them I've looked at are halfway up the stay, way too far away for any kind of gaurd to do anything.

of my bikes, the bridgestone, trek, and gitane have it, but the super-sport and raliegh don't have it.

Just one of those things you see all the time and never question till someone mentions it.
