The "sharing the road" thing only works if the drivers are into sharing too. Around here they aren't so you have to insist on a safe barrier. This is one way to do that.
Sounds totally obnoxious. No one wants to hit a cyclist. The point of a light is for a cyclist to be seen by drivers; a light shouldn't be used as a weapon.
Before you someone say "but a driver forced me off the road!", what do you think a cretin like that would do if you are blinding them with your taillight?
