Yeah, I think it's the new "safety" QRs.

Sorry Rob, no pics but we figured it out. Turns out it was just too stupid to think about. There's an extra piece and a lock nut which basically prevents the QR from being released enough to clear the lawyer lips on the fork. SO... kind of stupid since you now need an 8mm socket (wrench won't work either) to remove the QR. So, it's actually more of a pain in the ass than a standard axle... which I'm not sure why they didn't just go with instead.
