What manner of Schwinn is this???
Bought a black Schwinn Super Le Tour but can't figure it out. The top horizontal tube has a decal that says Super Le Tour . The front badge is stamped with the number 1481. The bike also has a decal that says its 1020 Xtra lite steel. From that I would assume its a Chicago Schwinn built on the 148th day of 198. But the seat tube at the top has a decal that looks slightly newer than the other decals that says its made in Japan for Schwinn. More clues, the left rear fork has the following number on it: 1H04579. Everything I've read about Schwinn serial numbers doesn't seem to match up with this.
As to the components, its got dia-compe center pull brakes which look original and Sugino cranks which may or may not be original. The rims are UKAI 27 1 1/8. And the final part of the mystery is that the front derailleur is Shimano Altus LT while the rear derailleur is a Suntour! Obviously, something could have been replaced.
Can anyone identify when and where this bike was made. (PS I love the old Schwinns. Had a 1978 Super Le Tour 12.2 which was stolen, and now have a 1979 Traveller III. And if I could figure out how to attach a picture that wasn't more than 100kb, I would do it.)
