A similar thing happened at my school this spring. Some kids wanted to start a lacrosse team but the school didn't think there was enough interest or funds so they started a club team that practiced at the high school. This year the school is making it an official varsity sport.

Alot of kids at my school (a small school, only ~150 per grade) know that I'm a cyclist. Some kids have asked me if I wear spandex and I tell them. Then I tell them about the distance I ride and most are impressed and even seem interested in starting to cycle.
