It's a totally different thing. I've been riding MTB for a long time and have never had the bike that I REALLY wanted. I have a job where I now can basically buy the bike I want. I gave several choices and you know...if I want to buy a $6k FS MTB then I will. I'll ride it for several years. I take trips to go ride several times a year and we have about 5-6 really great XC trails just a few miles from my house.
My current rig is getting tired. It needs to be replaced and I have some extra money for a really good bike.
