Road brakes, also known as caliper brakes, only attach to one point on the frame or fork and don't have as much stopping power as canitilever and V-brakes, although newer dual pivot caliper brakes stop almost as good as cantis. Caliper brakes are lighter and easier to adjust.

Funny thing. Your cheap "mountian" bikes usually have a crappy stamped steel caliper brake.
