Am I missing something???

Most airlines are now charging to ship bikes, $90 and more one way in many cases. If that is what they charge then fine but it at least should buy the special handling for which you are paying.

But the bike does need to be packed properly. Sounds to me like they just tossed it in a plastic bag.
