bike upgrade?

I have a couple of bikes that I have used recreationally...

I have a Dawes Lightning Sport, 56 cm steel frame that I got off of ebay and
a used 60 cm Trek 1220 that I bought used.

The trek is a bit too big but I have enjoyed riding it as it is light and has STI shifters.
The Dawes is also a great bike and I have enjoyed riding it as well (though it is heavier than
my trek...).

my dilemma... I have been riding for over a year and have been bit by the cycling bug, I have been
thinking about getting an entry level road bike from my LBS. I was looking at the Trek 1.2 (kind of like the
Trek 1000 I think) but I want to know what to expect from getting the bike...

will I go faster? (I currently go about 14.6 mph pace now with the dawes...)
will I be more comfortable to go longer distances? (I have gone a max of 35 miles but I do have to shift a bit to keep comfortable... )

my bike shop says that both would happen because the bike will be a better fit than the trek and the components will be better as well as fitting the bike to me so that it will be more comfortable than the bikes I currently have...

anyone have info from moving from a low end mail order bike to a higher level LBS bike?
