Personally, I wouldn't buy a used gruppo unless I was darn sure of its mileage and history.

Or maybe I should say, I wouldn't buy one again.

That said, the performance difference between 9 or 10 gears, or Ultegra and Dura Ace, is negligible for those of us in the "fast group ride" population.
