They've seen a little use.
The tear on the side started in a crash. It's gotten bigger rubbing the shoe on the ground pedaling through corners. (With speedplays directly mounted to the shoe, the cornering clearence is such I hit the side of the shoe to the ground, instead of the pedal.)
On the underneath, the heel pads always fall off. The carbon quickly abrades through. So to patch the abrasion, and make a heel pad that lasts, I just stick some goop on the heel.
