Not just for aesthetics like most people complain about. I don't like taking it on and off on when it goes on the roof rack 2 times a day. (although it MIGHT not fall off, hate to lose $20 and a back up license)
I use a soft sunglasses case to hold all the goods together and a plastic fishing ID cover for my license.
