Not just for aesthetics like most people complain about. I don't like taking it on and off on when it goes on the roof rack 2 times a day. (although it MIGHT not fall off, hate to lose $20 and a back up license)
I have never had my seat bag or computer fly off while on a roof rack, and that includes multiple local trips plus trips from Los Angeles to Fresno, Las Vegas, San Jose, Tucson, Portland, Seattle, etc. I figure if the bag can hold on while I'm riding it at 50 mph with my legs brushing by it 90 times per minute, it's pretty safe on the highway.
