I agree with sticking with carbon, which I prefer, although you might have to up your budget a bit beyond $2K. For a few hundred dollars more you can try shopping for a Kestrel Talon or Cervelo Soloist Team, both of which have solid component groups (Ultegra) and are excellent road bikes that can also serve well as time trial bikes.
