I have the Schwalbe Big Apple's in the 2.35 size on a rigid mt. bike commuter.
Dry = just fine for everything including flattish singletrack and grass.
Wet = fine on pavement. Terrible on the thinnest skim of mud and on down to gumbo. Bad on wet grass. Might as well be slicks.
Rolling Resistance = excellent! Smooth and quiet.
Weight = very heavy, but who cares, I'm not racing it.
Flat Protection = excellent! Watch the goat-heads go around and around stuck in your tire.
Comfort = excellent! 2.35 inches of lovin' at about 35 psi soaks up the bumps like a 45mm elastomer fork!
Wear = great so far. I think they are going to be 2000 mile tires.
Summary: If your commute is dry, you'll be happy with the big apples. If the off-road sections are wet, be careful or you could go down and break your radius like me! These are my favorite 3 season tires for me so far.
Tires I've commuted on in order of overall preference:
2.35 schwalbe big apples
1.5 slicks
2.4 WTB velociraptors and 2.1 mutano raptors
Panaracer 2.1 dart and 1.9 smoke
Jamis brand 1.95 knobbies (vintage)
Tioga 1.95 farmer johns cousins (vintage)
panaracer street tires (vintage tires, only lasted 200 miles)
