I've ridden a Bianchi Milano with 8sp Nexus hub around hilly DC and the gearing was fine. You can always swap the rear cog or front ring to move the gear range up or down. Nexus hubs require very little maintenance,I can't see the new Alfines being different. Bar style is kinda moot since swapping bars is usually relatively cheap and easy.
The Sohos are nice bikes, very well thought out. The rear caliper is in the V of the chain and seat stays and the fork has brazeons so racks and fenders are easy to mount. The top tube protector is a nice touch. Disc brakes rock, period. Personally,I'd go with the Soho line over the FX's any day.
