Don't worry, I thought the same thing until I realized that there aren't any 9V systems that I could think of out there.

That's true, but was the original light designed for alkaline or rechargeables? In any case, the light will be brighter at 9V and still be operating at a safe voltage. Batteryspace.com has both 8.4V and 9.6V nimh packs, either of these would work fine (as would a 7.2V pack)
