My suspicion is that your problem is due to either having the wrong pump or having your pump configured for schrader valves.

Your suspicions are thankfully wrong, in that, I have the Serfas FP-100 pump which is configured for, both, the Presta and, Schraeder valves.
I am pretty sure the problem is, stupid user error.
