I used to be able to reach down and shift while out of saddle, but I am pretty short and have always ridden small frames.

Alos - like the ABH reference. I particularly like the fact that the OP lists "maybe it's because they force me to stay low on the bars" as a benefit of DT shifters. That sentence would make ABH's head explode.
