As an anti carbon retrogrouch I have to give the the STI a lot of credit. When adjusted right they shift fast and crisp. I am still not sold on Shimano shifters. I don't understand why a 300$ mechanism is not rebuildable. If I was to go the modern shifter I would opt for the low to midrange campy models. Downtube shifting is a simple joy to deal with.

The simple mechanical advantage of downtube shifters is a virtue I will not let go of. If there is no racing done then STI is a total waste of effort.
