Perfect example of the evils of the collective mindset. In college I took a job at UPS. Happened to be the summer of the strike. My wages were being dinged for union dues for benefits I would never see because you needed 6 months of work for them to vest. I didn't want to join the union but was forced to in order to work there. When the strike was announced I told my manager I would still be coming in because I needed the money for tuition. Somehow the union thugs caught wind of this and I was threatened with bodily harm if I showed up to work.
Yes, thats freedom--physically forcing me to stop work to strongarm benefits I don't want.
I was quite happy to sell my labor without any attached benefits. Yet my freedom to do so was infringed by a bunch of collectivist thugs. Why shouldn't I be able to independently negotiate the price at which my labor is sold? That same summer I was forced out of another factor by the union because I was working on peicework and was able to run the machines a 150% of the rate the union "negotiated" I was making more paintbrushes in a day than the union guys could make in 3 days. I was more efficient, worked harder and was more competitive. Again, the collectivist unions thugs forced me out and prevented me from relaizing the fruits of my labor simply because they were too lazy to work as fast as I was.
