I don't entirely like the tone of the 'blame the victim' responses here. Theft is a crime; trust is NOT a crime. Do I think the shop staff should have followed proceedure and gotten the customer's ID? Yes I do. Does their failure to do so automatically confer some sort of 'right' to steal the bike? No, I don't. Does the failure to follow normal proceedures make the theft of the bike somehow more excusable? No. Does the failure to follow proceedures somehow make the shop less of a victim? NO! All in all, this is just a sad learning experience for the shop. Let's hope the bike turns up.
