I don't mind being a bike nut....but I'd like to see him biking. After doing 30 miles on a bike who's gears start to freeze after 2 months, brakes stick and hurts from a bad fit....I'm thinking he may try to find another hobby.
Once he rode one of my bikes and he did say "wow.....this really is a nice riding bike"...and that was my 1st bike (cheapest one I have, a $400 comfort bike).
Parents can be like that.....it just takes them time to realize that their children really might have learned something over the years that they do not know.
