I agree on this point, in a sense, but from a differnet perspective. Much of what they were doing wasn't all that disimilar from messengering back in the day (outside of the making the cars stop part, it was more trying to get through traffic as quickly as possible without getting hit). What with the "hotness" of fixed-gears these days I hate to think of a score of inexperienced yahoos trying that and getting themselves all f'd-up.
