Um, i ride a CX bike on the street for commuting. There's nothing wrong with it. If it really bothers you, just tie some streamers or attach some cute hello kitty figurines to the posts. Cutting them off is pointless.

A proper cantilever setup will stop just as well as a dual pivot road caliper and looks better (at least to me) than a V-brake setup.
