There isn't a lot of interest in these bicycles, so that may be the reason you aren't finding much info online. This is the little bit I know about them. They are a bonded aluminum frame with most if not all of them having steel chain and seat stays. There were quite a few models available and I think the 300 would have been in the lower tier of the lineup. As far as finding the model year, I think you would have more success with the production dates on the components as a reference point (check Vintage Trek website for code decipher). Despite the bashing these bikes have received over the years as far as frame failure, I have two of them ( a 440, and a Pre) and both have been very durable and reliable. A little harsh ride on chipseal, but overall fairly nice riders.
