Hello Chop!, I was reading about your tour in VV December 2005 yesterday :-)
I removed the clear reflector from my Strida front wheel, & used the spoke screw hole to mount a magnet for my wireless bike computer. There is another screw hole in the adjacent spoke, so I wonder if you could maybe use those, or is it a necessarily very short distance between light & magnet that's the problem?
Have you got a pic' of the setup on your back wheel on the Gobike?
