I used to work in electronics manufacturing and lead free solder is OK to get away with for point to point and through-hole as long as it's not critical stuff like medical and mil. components, but when you get to surface mount and really delicate complicated circuits you run a real risk of failure going lead free. Lead does not leach far enough to pose any hazard to anyone, people worried about lead from landfills should be aware that lead occurs in nature and it doesn't go anywhere. There are plenty of lead deposits that mind their own business and pose no threat to anyone... the biggest danger is lead particles in suspension in the air, it will happen with big industry and used to a lot with leaded gasoline, also at any indoor firing range with poor ventilation... the lead is not so much from the bullets but from the explosive primer that also contains mercury which is used to ignite the powder charge... lead can be dealt with if you know it's properties, like so many other things we are now going from one extreme to the other.
