no they were not just for trackies, back before good plastic ("carbon") soled shoes were available, there were many road riders using wooden soles.I had a pair of Duegis with wood I was very proud of...but they were NOT forgiving or built for comfort, the stiff sole was made to transmit power to the pedals. I think getting a good fit is very important, and if you have any foot health issues, it will probably aggravate them.
Edit: I should have said: not comfortable for *walking*, or even just standing, but fine for the purpose intended on the pedals.
