To me, the short Chrysler Town and Country/Caravan minivan has it all over the Honda Element and others, especially with the "Stow and Go" feature where all the seats fold flat.
We found the Honda to have relatively poor gas mileage, and tremendously difficult rear seats to fold down. The Caravan/Chryselr Town and Country have the highest of safety ratings and are listed on many sites as a "Best Buy."
While we chose to get the longer van for some other reasons, the shorter one's are a steal in the used car market, and you can put a bike in standing up with both wheels still on.
Here is an extended van with 13,000 miles- I just took a quick look at autotrader.com - in the Carlsbad, CA area. The shorter van would be about $2,000 less or so. It duplicates the one we just bought, but it is less expensive:
