I'm in the process of converting my old tange cr-mo mtb into a winter road bike, now then if I tip the frame I can here what seems to be grit moving about the inside of my chainstay, there are 2 little holes in in stays and was wondering if the grit could have got into the stays through the holes, or is there something wrong with the stays that I should be worried about.
I will mention that it as been years since I have been mountianbikeing but when I did in used to get pretty wet and muddy but was cleaned and lubed meticulously afterwards.

Are you sure it's grit and not a ball bearing someone dropped during a bottom bracket rebuild? The one time my wife did her own headset rebuild she dropped a bearing that hit the little hole on the top tube just right and went into the frame. Damned thing rolled back and forth every time you moved the bike! Drove us both nuts.
The holes are vents from the welding process to let gas and heat escape. They serve no other purpose. You might try spraying some rust treatment stuff in them to trap the roaming rocks and then seal the holes...after the treatment dries.
