I hose down the whole bike after a ride in the rain to get rid of most of the grime. Then lube the chain after drying. I don't use WD-40 on my drive train. I heard that stuff can act as a degreaser and cause more harm than good.
The WD is appropriate in winter due to the need for a light lube and the greater need to dispalce water and road salts. It's the lessor of the evils, if you will.
