Whats so bad about cheap cranks?

Since I am cheap/poor and really need a new road bike I've been looking at the Scattante, Motobecane USA and other cheap house/knockoff brands. The trend seems to be high end Shimano shifters and derailleurs, combined with cheap brakes/cranks/BBs and all cheap non-moving parts. I can upgrade most of the parts as money comes in, but cranksets get expensive. What am I going to be missing riding a cheap (truvativ, etc) crank? Is it just weight? Flexing? Poor shifting? Will the girls be all over me if I have sexy cranks?
