Is there some sort of bike co-op near your school? Perhaps they have some used parts that you can get away cheaply with.
Over here, Berkeley has something like that. It's pretty cool and it really helps a lot.

Yeah, I totally agree. Lecture needed. I don't wear one around campus because I go maybe half a mile to class. If I'm going to town, I always wear one.
I have a bike co-op at my school which I'm actually helping to run so hopefully I can pick something up from an old bike we have somewhere. If not, I'll buy something used at the LBS or on ebay.
I'd love to make it a fixie, but I spent 40 bucks to buy this amazing wheel from a 7-11 B team racer which is a mavic rim laced to a campy hub from the 80's. I actually don't shift that much, but I use the bike to haul groceries and I bought a 12-32 freewheel to replace the 11-23 on it. Fixie would be sweet, but I don't want to buy new wheels unless I get a sale for the wheel I have now.
Now the only problem is that my hip really hurts.
I'm going to have to stay off the bike for a while. Mtbing has beaten me up and this crash didn't help at all.
