If you're pushing down on the bars, all that weight is transfered to the tiny area of the steerer beneath the top bolt. I'm running a 1" steerer though, which puts an aluminum sleeve all the way around the steerer beneath the stem, so I figured I was in the clear. Maybe it's time to swap out that stem anyhow.
