Baggies are worn for the "cool" factor. You don't want to look like a newb right? just kidding.
Don't worry about looking like a newb on the trails, you will accomplish that on your own. Mountain bikers tend to be pretty accepting about those who are out on the trails on a mountain bike. The mountain world isn't nearly as caught up in the latest trend/fashion/technology as you see in roadies (there are plenty who are caught up in it though). Mountain biking is more about having fun for the most part instead of being Lance (still, there are plenty who are overly competative). Go out and have fun, ask your friend what the other riders wear, and use that as a go by. If you feel uncomfortable with something, walk it. Laugh at your falls, if you aren't falling occasionally, you probably aren't pushing yourself hard enough.
