now that you got me thinking, i've been almost hit by more than a couple cyclists all of which had brakes. its usually by their doing stupid stuff like rolling through stop signs, merging from off the sidewalk, or some other form of stupidity.
so maybe it comes down to the operator themselves, not whether or not brakes or no brakes, because grabbing a hand full of brake is not the only way to handle emergency situations.
seriously, do you know how many college kids in eugene on road/mtn bikes i almost get hit by on a daily basis because they a) randomly start swerving around everywhere, endangering the safety of everyone around them b) go the wrong way, on a one way, through the bike lane, endangering everyone that's riding the RIGHT WAY in the bike lane c) ride bikes with obsolete brake setups that are so badly out of maintenance that i can skid stop faster in the rain than they can stop with both brakes?
it makes portland seem like heaven.
