You will get used to the shifters in no time. I too bought a 2007 Trek 1500 and had never used the STI shifters before. After a few rides you will get used to the shifting. I had to get used to them as well. They even have half click adjustments so if your in the small chain ring and smallest cog you can adjust the shifting with a half click so that you won't cross chain. I love my 1500.
