I have used WD-40 on excessively stubborn rubber grips though. So long as you wash out the WD-40 from the grip, and de-grease the handlebar sufficiently, there shouldn't be any problems. In the case of some cheap-o MTB grips (of which I've wanted to save for some reason or another), I've found the tactic to work quite well.
