I would imagine the probability of the above scenario is pretty small. Try it and see. Most likely your biggest problem will be in removing the old freewheel; they get cranked on like crazy. If you don't have the appropriate tool, this is definitely a job for the LBS. You should be able to get a 7 spd freewheel for literally nothing.
