Some fine brews have been mentioned and there is nothing wrong with Gunniess or SA. They are fine gateway beers to truly great craft beers.
Local favs are
O'Fallon 5 day IPA
O'Fallon smoked porter
Schlafly pilsner
Boulevard tripple
