I have a bright helmet light for some of my bikes and my main commuter has an uber-bright dual halogen headlight. The great thing about riding home in the dark is the pedestrians see the reflected light in the signs way before I get there and my headlights throwing shadows 200' before I pass.
A couple weeks ago I had a male jogger (running with female) jump left when I rang the bell. He leaped back in time not be be ran over [at 20mph]. I had paused preparing to brake before he cleared the path. At the same time I yelled "heads up" in a stern voice. It wasn't until I passed him that I realized he was being a jerk.
